Former US treasury secretary Larry Summers is departing from the board at the ChatGPT creator, just several days after a collection of electronic messages between him and late convicted sex offender the disgraced billionaire became widely known.

The economist remarked in an announcement that he was "appreciative for the chance to have participated, enthusiastic about the potential of the company, and look forward observing their development".

The former Harvard president, who previously headed the Ivy League institution, stated on earlier this week that he would be stepping back from public roles due to his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.

The newly public communications demonstrated that the economist corresponded with Epstein until the eve of Epstein's 2019 apprehension for suspected trafficking of young people.

In additional comments, the technology organization stated it accepted the economist's determination to resign.

"We value his numerous inputs and the viewpoint he offered to the Board," OpenAI stated.

Political Context

This development follows after the entire Congress of Congress agreed on Tuesday to endorse a bill that would compel the Department of Justice to release its documents on Epstein.

The measure will afterward head to the office of President Trump for endorsement. He has stated he expects to endorse the legislation, after changing his position on the issue following objections from his followers.

After the messages were made available with the public, the former official said he assumed "total ownership for my ill-advised judgment to continue communicating with the financier".

He added that he hoped "to reestablish trust and mend relationships with the people closest to me".

Summers held high-level positions under party leaders; serving as Treasury chief under the former president, and as head of the White House economic team under President Obama.

He led the institution from five years and is still a professor there. When announcing his withdrawal from public duties previously on Monday, he stated he would maintain his academic responsibilities.

Other Impacts

Following his declaration on Monday, the Washington think tank, a left-leaning think tank in the capital where Summers was a senior fellow, announced that he was ceased to be connected with the institution.

Summers became part of the directorate of the technology firm, which makes the language model, in last year - following a failed attempt to remove its top executive the company leader.
