Aaron Rai Secures the Abu Dhabi Title in Thrilling Play-Off Battle Against Fellow Englishman Fleetwood

Aaron Rai demonstrated exceptional nerve to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, beating Tommy Fleetwood in a dramatic play-off after a rollercoaster final round of play.

Rai sank a decisive birdie putt from just over eight feet to seal the victory, repeating his sole prior Rolex Series triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was likewise a playoff win over Fleetwood.

Final Round Excitement

The champion started the final round with a one-shot advantage over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, 67 closing round that featured seven birdie putts and two bogeys.

The challenger moved a stroke ahead with the 16th and 17th to play after a birdie putt on the sixteenth, but his rival tied it up again on the seventeenth and then missed a ten-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the last green.

Playoff Decider

That set up a playoff at the Yas Links course where Rai prevailed to take the title and $1.5 million (£1.13 million) in winnings.

{“Tommy is a world-class golfer and an even better person. To compete alongside him the last two days was really special,” said the winner, the present world No 30. “You’re so concentrated on playing the round and staying in the zone, it’s difficult to put into words at the moment how it is. It is incredible to be stood here.”

Notable Contenders

Rory McIlroy found himself just too much to do, coming up one shot behind in a tie for third with Højgaard, after a stunning 10-under final round of 62. It was McIlroy’s best-ever round on the European Tour, including eight birdie putts and one eagle.

The Danish golfer fired six birdie putts of his own, but his chances of topping the leaderboard were hit by a dropped shot on the 12th. English golfer Richard Mansell produced an excellent final-round 63 to end up in a tie for fifth place with Australia’s Hillier.
